One of the most fascinating things I have found out about Wilmington since living here is the beauty of all the majestic churches in this area. If you are ever in Wilmington, NC I would strongly suggest you bring your camera and plan on spending a day just meandering around the downtown area. You will not be disappointed. Between the fascinating churches, well appointed historical homes and the opportunity to peek into a few private gardens…well in my opinion it just doesn't get better.

I was fortunate to take this walking tour (no guide included) during the earlier part of the summer. I would not recommend this if the weather is calling for a heat warning. In that case, check out The Dog Days of Summer: What to Do in The Cape Fear to Stay Cool blog and head over to some of those instead.

So here we go….

Spending the day wondering around, taking it all in, meeting the locals, and enjoying the sounds and wonders of downtown Wilmington is one of my favorite staycations.

Osteria Cicchetti Restaurant: OC Review

Hearts: Large portions, reasonably priced, lovely setting and gluten free pastas available upon request.
Farts: bring on the chocolate sauce and can be a tad noisy in the large dinning area.

This was our second time to the Osteria Cicchetti, affectionately dubbed the OC by locals here in Wilmington. This lovely Italian restaurant is located directly across from Mayfair. On this trip we brought a guest visiting from Florida.

Before entering, one is greeted by a lovely fountain. Definitely a charming addition to the ambiance.

Once inside, there are several dinning areas. I prefer not to sit in the larger dinning area as it can get a bit noisy when the restaurant is busy which is often.

We went for lunch on this day and I ordered their Italian salad topped with their special fish of the day Halibut.

YOF ordered the Tre Colore salad topped with salmon. Her salad consisted of arugula, endive, radicchio, and was dressed in balsamic vinaigrette.

My friend ordered the house special. A lovely dish of fresh fish atop fresh mixed vegetables.

For dessert YOF and YAH opted to once again order the profiteroles while my friend opted for the cheesecake. Both are well made and we would recommend them highly.

There is no doubt in YAH's mind...we WILL be back!

Nicolas Restaurant Review

Hearts: A chef that goes above and beyond to please his customers, gluten free items, lovely atmosphere and reasonably priced too!
Farts: I have heard their drink selection is awesome...I don't drink unfortunately.

YAH says...

The family was in for a few days and with them their dietary considerations. Both families have members that must eat gluten free. One would think that in this day and age, every restaurant would offer gluten free but that is not the case.

After finishing up at the Children's Museum in downtown Wilmington, we went to the Internet to find a place to eat that served gluten free. Nicolas was one of the only ones we could find that was not a chain restaurant. My niece was tired of the disappointing taste of gluten free at the chains. We gladly headed over to Nicolas.

The interior reminded me of a NY styled restaurant, chic but comfy. Not your typical Italian type of interior design but definitely refreshing and relaxing.

The lunch menu offers a wide choice of options from appetizers, soups, salads, subs and sandwiches, pizzas to pastas.

We wound up ordering the fried mozzarella and chicken wing appetizers to start. All the adults ordered a house salad with a wonderful lemon dressing. The gluten free selections were ordered from their dinner menu and included spaghetti and penne pasta in parmesan pink sauce.

The children ordered a wood fired twelve inch cheese pizza, chicken cutlet sub with fries, and gluten free spaghetti with butter and parmesan (this was a special request not on their menu). I opted for the soup and salad combo.

I did taste the gluten free penne pasta in parmesan pink sauce and it was delicious. So much so that both my nieces couldn't believe that this entre was gluten free. They kept asking the waitress if in fact this dish was gluten free. She reassured them several times and said that the chef prepares everything carefully and they could be reassured that all of the dishes that were ordered gluten free were in fact gluten free.

All of the lunch entrees were yummy. My favorite was in fact the gluten free pasta with the pink sauce. I know what I am ordering the next time I go there for dinner.

And what sets this restaurant apart from any other that I have dined at so far is the chef. He made a personal appearance at our table to talk with my nieces about the gluten free dishes they had ordered. They are hooked! Not only will they be back the next time they are in town but they truly appreciated his wonderful flare for cooking! He is indeed an eccellentissimo chef!

Happy Days Diner Take Two!

We went back! I mean who wouldn't with the great selection for desserts. And being we are dessert freaks...of course we went back! Just look at this scrumptious chocolate cake. YOF said it was the best chocolate cake she has found in Wilmington to date. She added the scoop of gelato.

I ordered a wonderful apple crumb topped with vanilla gelato. Warmed to perfection and blended with just the right amount of apples and spices. Mmmmmmmmmmm!

So for take two, I say two thumbs up on Happy Days Diner desserts!

Oh Happy Days: Review of Happy Days Diner

Baba Ghannouj

Baba Ghannouj is located inside the food court at Independence Mall. They opened awhile ago and we have been going there pretty regularly but I kept forgetting to bring my camera on our foody outing. Not this time!

The food at Baba Ghannouj is fresh, traditional Greek, and has a multitude of choices from the standard gyro to chicken kabob. They also have several Greek desserts to choose from as well.

Both YOF and myself truly enjoy this Greek quick stop. The only drawback, in my opinion, is that one has to consume their food in the noisy food court or take it to go.

The food speaks for itself! It is yummy delicious and reasonably priced too!

No-Fo is one of the best cake dessert locations around...no fooling. I am not the cake lover here but I will say they have a terrific selection of cakes in my book!

This treasure of a spot has not only ambiance but a lovely lunch selection. Immediately upon entering you are surrounded by a chic gift shop containing a wide variety of items. Included in this area are items for children, bed and bath items, books and cd's and my favorite a large selection of chocolate delicacies.

Around the corner you go and immediately you feel as if you are going down under the sea. From ceiling to floor the theme is swimming with unique ocean items. It gives this eatery a special ambiance that is both relaxing and yet intriguing.

On this outing, I ordered the grilled chicken salad which consisted of grilled chicken breast atop mixed greens, fresh oranges, red onions, spiced pecans and goat cheese served with a side of balsamic vinaigrette. They have made this salad their own with the fresh oranges and spiced pecans. The serving size is huge!! I wound up taking 1/2 of it home as I was ordering dessert.

For dessert your server will give you a breakdown of choices as their cake selections change. On this day I had a delicious lemon and blueberry cake with cream cheese frosting. I would go back just for this cake! It was moist and the blueberries fresh not canned. I think I have found our dessert heaven in this little gem of a treasure down under the sea!

Young Old Fart is buried in textbooks this week, so I will just post her luncheon pics for you to see.

Keeping with her healthy eating trend, barring our Fridates for desserts, she selected this entree which consisted of mahi mahi atop a large portion of grilled veggies. I do know that she finished it all and said it was delicious.

For dessert she selected a banana cake with butter cream frosting. She said that butter cream was a tad too sweet but balanced with the cake. In her opinion she would have preferred it topped with cream cheese frosting. And the main suggestion she had for the restaurant is to figure out a way to serve the cakes at room temperature. Because many of the cakes ingredients require refrigeration, we received the cakes directly from the frig. Unfortunately this takes away from their consistency and tends to make the cakes not a moist as they could be if they were served room temperature.

But...this will not keep me from coming back. I WILL be back for that yummy cake I had. Even Young Old Fart said I got the best out of the two :-)

What makes this dress keeper so special is that she gets to know her customers. In short order she will be pulling just the right outfit that will meet your request. This personal touch is lacking in the larger department stores and to me this service is part of the charm of supporting our local businesses here in Wilmington. She gets an A+ for customer focus and customer service.

Each garment in this boutique is hand selected by the owner and there is a wide selection. But I didn't see two of the same thing while I was there!

You can be assured that your outfit won't be walking past you in Wilmington. Her selection is a wonderful mix of cotton and floaty fabrics that are reminiscent of the yester years and yet, are top fashion styles for the trendy stylist today.

I was really excited to try out this diner knowing that it had a ton of desserts to try out.

From gelato, to cake to pie...there really was anything to suit your hearts desire.

YAH and I went twice. Once for sundaes and another time for cake and pie. The sundae experience was definitely unforgettable, but probably not in the best way. At the waitress's recommendation I got their brownie sundae with vanilla, chocolate, and coffee gelato, a brownie, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, whipped cream and a cherry. I know, I know it sounds like enough to feed an entire army. I knew it would be big but normally portion sizes never deter me.

Even when this sucker came out I thought, "I can totally pack this away." I took the first bite and it was glorious, the gelato was just divine. However, I eventually made it to the brownie and was completely thrown off by its sweetness. In my mind brownies are a more chocolatey fudgey goodness, not so much a carrier for super sweet chocolate chips and sugar rushes. While the brownie was overtaking my sweet tooth, the second I hit the coffee gelato I almost blew out of my seat. Now, I love coffee flavored ice cream...I have to tell you this gelato was like taking a spoon and diving into your Foldger's container. It was WAY too strong. Ironically enough, though I was thinking this the whole time I was eating this sundae, I ended up finishing off the whole thing. Need proof?

It wasn't until after I finished the entire thing that the waitress informed me, "Normally it takes three of us to eat this and even then we don't finish it! Hehehehehehe" Well...I paid for eating three waitress portions worth of this concoction, trust me. The sugar rush from this bad boy knocked me out for the rest of day. I am not diabetic, but after my Friday afternoon sugar coma I think I can sympathize. Now don't think I won't be coming back for more gelato goodness, I definitely will. But next time I plan to create my own dreamy sundae so I can control the sweetness level and the amount of hours I plan to be comatose : )

Young At Heart Says...

We were on a mission. You see, Young Old Fart is now in the throws of summer school at UNCW and swears that the only thing that keeps her going is our Friday dessert dates. Off we went in search of their renowned Sundaes to fill her veins with renewed perseverance (better known as a sugar rush). The sundae selection is vast and I DO mean vast. In addition you can create your own gelato concoctions.

I choose their Almond Joy Sundae. It was definitely a joy to the palette albeit a bit sweet for my older taste buds. Combining the three known ingredients of the Almond Joy Bar one will find Coconut, chocolate and almond gelato topped with chocolate sauce, almond brittle, whipped cream and a cherry.

On my next outing to this 50's throwback I will be bringing a Sundae sharing buddy to help me polish off this huge sundae. As you know by now, Young Old Fart NEVER shares a dessert. I was left to my own demise and almost finished it off but not quite.

We will be returning in the near future...more updates to follow. I have my eyes on another yummy dessert I spied!

I was thrilled to find what reminds me of a NY art gallery. Tucked inside The Cotton Exchange is this lovely pottery and fine crafts boutique, Port City Pottery and Fine Crafts. It has a wide variety of artisans, all using a wide variety of materials to produce their works of art.

As so often is said...a picture says a thousand words. I will let the pictures tell this story...

This is just a small sampling of the exquisite artworks that abound here. Come see for yourself or better yet, make a date with a friend to attend Fourth Friday Gallery Nights!

And live out loud they do! You can't help but be enthralled by the different "music" that each artist expresses in this well crafted gallery. It is a feast for the eyes and food for the soul.

Just about a block from the lovely Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington, Press 102 can be found.

A Florida friend of mine was visiting and while taking a historical walking tour of Wilmington, we were fortunate to get referred to this gem of a restaurant by three lovely business woman headed over there for lunch. Originally my intention was take my friend to the Brewery but after their rave reviews from these loyal locals…I was hooked.

The atmosphere is cozy but upscale. Definitely reminiscent of my NY soho days but fitting for downtown Wilmington. We were the last to fill up the inside of the restaurant which attests to its popularity with the local business crowd. Immediately I started perusing their menu. Lots and lots to choose from for lunch.

I choose a soup and salad combo. The squash soup was pleasantly flavored and tasted delicious. My salad was traditional mixed greens sided with wedges of tomato and topped with fresh cheese. I have to admit that there were many items on their lunch menu that I wished to try. The chief incorporates fresh herbs and locally acquired fare in his menus selections. The Panini selection is impressive as well as a choice of seven salads that one can top with blackened chicken or salmon for an additional charge.

My friend ordered their quiche of the day with a side of fresh fruit. Her asparagus quiche was also flavorful (we always share). Hats off to this local chef's well presented plates with a wide menu selection for lunch.

Of course I ended with dessert. A lovely warm brownie clothed in vanilla ice cream, caramel and chocolate sauce. Yum is all I can say!

They are open Wednesday - Sat - 8 am until…and Sunday for brunch from 9am - 3pm.

I will be going back for sure! And I am adding this one to my "guest" list…my future guests are sure to be pleased.

The Belle of The Ball: Review of Bellamy Mansion Tour

Farts: Reminds one of darker days gone by

I was very pleasantly surprised on the Bellamy Mansion tour. I am not a history buff per se but I do enjoy a good yarn now and then. Our tour guide was a lovely lady filled with not just the architectural detail and historical details of Bellamy Mansion but she had a rare flare that intertwined the personal lives of Bellamy's previous owners. So much so, I still want to go back and get a book in their gift shop about one of the home's original slaves. He had apparently escaped via the Cape Fear River and his memoirs were later published in this book.

Indeed, this tour guide made my day!! In addition she captured the true essence of why I moved to Wilmington in the first place, the grace of southern hospitality. She reminded me of a true history artisan. One that was able to keep the audience fully captivated with enough details to entice you into the past. I was definitely doing a dance with a grand lady on this day.

Bellamy Mansion offers the visitor a spectacular architectural preview of days gone by. Her graceful columns, pocketed doors, chandeliers and grand rooms speak to a time in history when ball gowns and parasols dominated even though this mansion was referred to as a "working" mansion. But underneath her finery lingered slave quarters and segregated bathrooms. A time in our history when suppression and slavery prevailed. Such a contrast is evident in almost every corner of this mansion. Such a contrast, I believe we need to more fully understand.

The tour is a paradox. It is enjoyable for the beauty of Bellamy Mansion but it is also heart breaking as it reminds us of a time when our country used men, women, and children to build plantations upon while robbing them of their freedom.

I will carry the history of this belle with me forever. In the pictures I took, in the memory of our wonderful tour guide but more poignantly in the memory of those who sacrificed their freedom to both run Bellamy Mansion and her plantations as well as to help build the city of Wilmington.

This is one tour you should not miss!

Crescent Moon: A Reflection of Things

Crescent Moon is located in The Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington. It is a lovely little shop filled with beautiful hand made glass and metal artisan pieces. From blown glass to ceiling fixtures, this shop will inspire you to reflect on the beauty of all things glass and metal.

Featured above is a beautiful lighted glass ornamental ball that would be perfect in a garden or featured in the home.

There is no doubt that you will find many gift ideas that will appeal to all personalities. The shop features functional, decorative, and collectible pieces as well as custom pieces.

One of my favorites is the lighted "jelly fish" which is hand made all from glass. This alone is worth the trip...enlightening to say the least.

In addition, there are colorful hand made glass lamps that truly are beautiful.

Yes, the only thing produced here is originality! Well worth a trip downtown.

Holy Brownie Batman!: Review of Henry's Restaurant

Sh...sh...it's okay to cry. I know you missed me and my obsession with sweets. That's right, I know your will to live was obliterated without my constant reminders of all things delicious and divine : )

Henry's Restaurant is a really nice place to grab a bite to eat. What's even sweeter is that they consistently have "crate to plate" specials that feature local food.

Young At Heart decided to go with Henry's stuffed portebella mushroom with a small side salad topped with their infamous cucumber dill dressing. She said it was delicious and a perfectly light meal. In my opinion, it could have afforded another cap or so.

I went with a spinach salad topped with salmon. The salmon was perfectly cooked, crusty outside with a buttery center. If it were me I would eat grilled salmon every night and blissfully die from mercury poisoning.

Okay, now for the best part...DESSERT! Both my mom and I were looking forward to their molten chocolate lava cake but unfortunately they have discontinued it since it was the only dessert not made in-house (YOU FOOLS! You should've jacked the recipe THEN stopped ordering it! Or at the very least send me a crate or two...). Alas, we both "settled" for their brownie sundae. Silly little waiter thought we were going to share one...silly waiter, proper portion sizes are for amateurs.

The brownies had that perfect crisp top with a slightly undercooked center, and the ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce were the perfect complement. Although, I would've preferred to have my brownies warm enough to melt the ice cream a tad, along with more chocolate sauce. Hey if I go all out, I go ALL out!

Overall...you should definitely check Henry's out. You and I both know those brownies are calling your name : )

I definitely have a fetish for salt water taffy and I have found the perfect place for me to satisfy this craving. It is an adorable little shop called Market Street Candy & Gifts. And if you haven't guessed, it is located downtown on Market street near Kilwins Ice Cream Shop.

They have candies of every variety including lots of the oldies but goodies like Clark, Sugar Daddy, Mary Janes and the list goes on and on.

And gifts to suit many tastes at reasonable prices. So if you have little ones in toe or want a special gift, do check out this recent addition to our lovely downtown! It is a place to feed the child in all of us.

A Tranquil Harbor: The Arboretum

It has been too long...way too long since my last post. Unfortunately, I have been sick with my rheumatoid arthritis and can only hope that things will improve.

Finding The Arboretum has helped me to attain the peace and tranquility to begin once again. The Arboretum is not only an educational spot but a lovely getaway to rejuvenate the soul. And it's FREE!

From the moment I entered the seven acres, I knew I had found an oasis. The Arboretum does offer an opportunity to see what best grows in our local area and the different garden landscapes confirms that everyone can have a green thumb. And if you need any help, this is the place to ask your questions. You can also volunteer to help with the gardening.

I am not sure which beautiful garden is my favorite....

The exquisite rose garden that offers every possible hue of the rainbow

including Old Fart's favorite, yellow roses.

Or the huge man made mini lake that features this ferocious dragon. And some mighty big gold fish that you can feed for a quarter. What a great outing for children!

Walk a little ways and one will find hidden treasures everywhere.

And for the little ones, there is a unique children's garden that features everything in pint size proportions. Be sure to check out the inside of the little house....surprises await!

The garden gets an A for handicap accessible and even features an ability garden. I learned a few new things to make gardening easier with my arthritis.

I love gardening but they have done such a spectacular job, I think I will employ the KISS principle and just move my home over to The Arboretum.

I first found Blue Moon last year when I was searching for some very unique gift items. Bingo! I was able to find a gift for all those hard to find people on my list and more.

Recently, I took my friend from Maryland to this quaint spot for her to explore and enjoy. And enjoy she did! She purchased several gifts during our shopping extravaganza.

Blue Moon has much to offer including gardening accessories,

whimsical works of art,

unique light up flower arrangements,

funny but practical gifts (pickle forks in case you didn't know),

clothing boutiques,

furniture and decorative pieces,

local art work,

baby fashions,

photographs,

handmade benches from both wood and cement,

whimsical creatures of every variety,

office necessities,

jewelry of all types,

collectibles,

and my favorite...homemade food items (I bought chocolate covered NC peanuts). And these are just a few of the shops inside.

Definitely a terrific spot to spend some time with a friend or even by yourself!

It can get rather difficult to figure out what will be enjoyable for family or friends to do while they are visiting us in Wilmington. But I will say, if you haven't tried the Willmington Trolley Tour then you should venture out and give it a whirl.

The entire tour takes approximately 45 minutes and although it isn't what I would consider cheap, it is worth the fee for visitors and those in love with historical homes. And by all means google online for coupons. We saved $1 a person on this day. I found my coupon in Brunswick Islands & Cape Fear Coast Visitors Guide which you can find in the lobby of most Wilmington hotels and down in the Cotton Exchange or you can also search them online at www.visitorsguidenetwork.com.

The tour starts out on Dock and Water St. and departs hourly. We were the last three allowed on this trip. Our tour guide was informative and entertaining. From local facts to the details about the historical homes lining the tour, he did a wonderful job. My only problem was I couldn't always hear him. There are no windows on the trolley and you are open to traffic noises. In addition, there was a young child next to us that insisted on continually talking several octaves above the loudspeaker.

Baring my lack of auditory information, I was still awed with the visuals on this trip...

All in all, this tour is for (in my opinion) preteen and up, unless you have a very young history lover in your midst. However, the tour company does not put restrictions on any age. And I didn't notice a handicap accessible lift for wheelchairs. So if you are traveling with anyone using a wheelchair, call to find out if and how that can be handled.

You would think riding a trolley in downtown Wilmington would be a glamorous experience, my sore bum and sweaty shirt would have to disagree with you. Right off the bat I must warn our readers to NOT sit on "the hump" seat of the bus. Honestly, I couldn't concentrate on most of the ride due to my derriere's extreme discomfort.

Barring booty bruises, the tour definitely offered some pretty sites (however, I would avert my direction when you pass some of the sketch parts of Wilmington). Unfortunately, like YAH said, I couldn't hear our tour guide. Not that this was much of a loss, the parts that echoed out seemed pretty ho-hum and architectural. All in all, I think this activity constitutes as a "one time deal." It was a cute hour spent on a Saturday afternoon, but definitely not something I would spend $11 on again. Now, add a dozen donuts or so, a butt cushion, and some AC and I just might reconsider...

OK, I know many of you loved this place when it was under a different name and served exclusively Greek cuisine. Well, first I didn't have the opportunity to try them when they featured only Greek food and second, I personally love diners if they have good food.

I was actually happy to see a diner (and from what I can see a true diner by northern definitions) pop up here in Wilmington. And I figure the owner changed his offerings because he wasn't making enough money to keep it only Greek. I mean he is in business to make money...right? Now for the definition of a diner by YAH:

1) Must have a wide offering of eclectic food such as American burgers, fries, etc.

2) Must have some offerings of Greek food. I kid you not, all northern diners offer some type of Greek food be it the gyro or the Greek salad. And no, I have not dug deep to find out if every northern diner is Greek owned (I am betting they are though).

3) Open 24/7 or close to it.

4) Serve breakfast foods not just for breakfast but also for lunch and dinner.

5) And last, bake their own desserts or find someone local that can do it for them, thus fooling the dinner into believing they baked it themselves.

The College Diner has successfully met 4 out of the 5 standards. Later on I will devulge which they failed to attain.

I had not eaten a gyro in over a year and I was definitely craving one when my Maryland friend and I decided to check out this place. With out diner's checklist in mind, in we went.

The place does have some of the interior characteristics of a diner but was missing the well known counter that is always found in northern establishments. After some online research I discovered that within the past year the owner had converted his exclusive Greek restaurant to a diner. Thus, the explanation I am sure for why no counter.

Upon parusing the menu, I immediately spied some Greek offerings. Praise to Jesus I thought! I have found a gyro under the flag of a diner. Immediately I had decided my selection. To my dismay, my friend also decided on the gyro. So much for variety in this review. Can you tell we both are missing our gyro buddies of late?

The gyro was delicious. A perfect blend of lamb, lettuce, tomatoes, a touch of onion, that special blend of dressing layered on pita bread. And to boot...fries to go along. It was gyrolicious! I could tell by the yogurt dressing that a Greek must own this place. They have a way with cooking the lamb to perfection along with dressing this sandwich with that yummy yogurt blend.

I was quite full after finishing my lunch but forged on for dessert. Unfortunately on this day there was no cheese cake. What! No cheesecake available at a diner? Blasphamey! Sin of all sins! They were out. So I took a peek into their dessert case but only saw two pies. Neither of which I wanted on this particular day. And besides...they didn't look like they were baked on the premises or nearby off the premises. Yes, this is the shortcoming. They are only 80% diner in my book. But I will be back.

I already hear that gyro calling my name....

P.S. For those of you missing some of the familiar Greek offerings from this owner's previous menu, call a few days ahead to see if the chef might not accommodate a special request. They are often flattered and if you bring a few people along to eat the same requested dish...he/she just might fulfill your craving. I figure the worst thing one might hear is no. And it might be a win/win. You will get your missed Greek dish and he will get an old customer back.

Calling all lovers of fresh veggies and home baked goodies! The Riverfront Farmers Market is located in downtown Wilmington and runs until mid December. For best pickings one should get there early but even later in the day you will find fresh goodies galore.

By the time we arrived, the market had been underway for 3 hours. The entire market runs the length of the riverfront and can easily be accessed from the free parking near The Cotton Exchange. We were lucky to grab one of the only parking spaces left but I suspect that is because we arrived much later then true marketers.

The place was humming with vendors, visitors and true Wilmingtonians. I spied lots of delicious home baked goods including breads of every variety, cookies, fudge, and even an organic variety of goodies. Mingled with this were vendors offering fresh fruit and veggies from several local farms, home grown honey, local artists, and of course multiple farms offering plantings from vegetables to exotic species that I assume will flourish here in my backyard.

Unfortunately I couldn't buy any of the food offerings as we were heading over to tour Wilmington and I was afraid that hours of heat would wilt my goodies. My friend from Maryland seemed to be enjoying herself and promised to return for some of the plant offerings. She is a devout flower gardener and tends her Maryland yard like a new born babe.

I for sure plan on becoming a regular Saturday morning worshiper of this lovely market. Heck...not only do I get to stock up on lots of home baked goodies, fresh veggies and a possible flower or two...I get the lovely view of the river while I meander amongst the offerings. I can't really think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning. OK...maybe sleeping in late but other then that it's off to the market I will go.

Have you ever been stuck at home on the weekend feeling really lame and reminiscent of a crazy cat lady? Okay, maybe that's just me. Either way, whether you are a feline freak or just bored and in the Wilmington area, the Riverfront Farmers Market is definitely worthy of your Saturday morning and early afternoon.

WARNING: If you plan on going to the market PLEASE pick a nice day weather-wise. Unfortunately, the day we went it was SCORCHING. It is for this reason that I feel like my review may be a little bit biased...I don't bode well when I feel like a stuffed turkey baking in an oven.

First off, garden lovers will definitely have a field day at the market. It seemed like every other booth was plant/herb/flower related. While they were pretty to look at, I don't have a green thumb nor do I enjoy being attacked by various creepy crawlers.

Second, the market is a really nice way to support local stores and get some homemade food. Want a fresh baked loaf of bread? Head over to the numerous booths sporting goodies ranging from vegan loaves to Italian biscotti.

Finally, while you're roaming this slice of town be prepared to be serenaded by ornate musicians. The day we went there was a cute little banjo guitar type trio that definitely got my feet tapping.

All in all, the Riverfront Market is a nice way to spend some time perusing what Wilmington has to offer (as long as you aren't melting like the Wicked Witch of the West).

Southern comfort food is not one of my top choices for dinning but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Carolina BBQ is an exception. Now, it is not fancy by any means but rather an all you can eat buffet. And there is definitely lots to eat.

If you don't love the traditional southern comfort foods then this place is not for you. But if you love your food deep fried, slathered in butter, dripping with fatty goodness...then come on down!

Their buffet menu includes: fried chicken, fried fish, pulled pork bbq of two varieties, sausage with onions, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, collard greens, squash, and corn. And this is not the full menu by any means, just what I can recall off the top of my head. Desserts include: banana pudding, strawberry shortcake, pie, and hand scooped ice cream.

And for the dieters at heart they do have a decent salad bar.

My favs were the pulled pork barbecue, the collard greens, hush puppies (these little doggies are out of this world with flavor), and the various greens on the salad bar. The thing I love best about buffets is if the cook is halfway decent, you should find something of your liking. For this spot, you will find lots to your liking just so long as you love traditional southern food. My friend found true love on our visit here. He was a traditional southern dish dressed with a splash of vinegar...collard greens. This was her very first time trying this veggie and she is now a devout worshiper of this southern gent.

The absolute best feature of this meal however is the price. They are celebrating 6 years of success in Wilmington and offer the customer all this fair for $6. Your drink (unless you get water) will run an additional $1.99. And you can eat all you want! Take out is priced by the pound.

So, if you are looking for a meal that will make you feel warm and full, follow this little piggy to Carolina BBQ.

Brewing Some Love: Review of Front Street Brewery

I am not into beer or any alcoholic beverage for that matter. In my opinion, they smell and taste terrible and cause people of all ages to act like fools (though this does get me to chuckle a bit sometimes). Thus, when we went to Front Street Brewery for the first time I really thought it would be the last. Luckily, I was very wrong and pleasantly surprised.

While FSB is not the classiest place to take someone to lunch or dinner, it does exude a local je ne sais quoi. In fact, it's so popular with Cape Fearers that it isn't unlikely you'll have to wait 15 minutes or so OR have to deal with a booming noise level (due to adult conversations, crying children, and excessively loud TVs). Personally, I prefer the first level of the pub because you don't have to walk down the stairs to get to the bathroom, and more families (aka children) tend to favor the top floor. Besides, you can get a good view of their brewing headquarters and the merchandise that is available for purchase.

On to the best part...food!

Almost every time I go out to eat I get a really light meal so that I can splurge on a dessert. While the house salad with grilled chicken and balsamic vinaigrette was my main dish, I did steal a good third of the table's nachos. The fact that I allocated room in my stomach for something other than a salad and dessert should speak for these nachos in itself. One phrase comes to mind: "You can't have just one!"

The salad was good. To be fair to FSB, you really shouldn't come here for a salad. They are known for burgers, fries, beer, and all the other greasy things that go along with happy hour. However, the greens were fresh, the chicken was moist, and the dressing is thick and tasty.

Okay, the first time I had FSB's german chocolate cake I knew I had finally come to understand what love is. Everything went into slow motion and it felt like we were the only two people, or person/cake duo, in the room. The second time I encountered my lover my mom had to snap me out of unconscious singing. Yes folks, it's true. I sang a sexy song to a chocolate cake. Is this why I can't find a date? Unfortunately, around the third or fourth time I met my darling for some afternoon delight I had come to discover that a piece of him was missing. He was there physically, but his heart belonged to another. By "heart" I mean the best and most divine part of my beau...his sweet chocolatey frosting. Not only did this mishap cause me to scream "Oh good gosh, where's the ganache?!" it also left me crying at night, just knowing that things would never be the same again. Alright, alright, I know most people don't care as much as I do about cake so I'll sum up my lost love in three words: chocolatey, moist, and huge.

All in all, I know that every time I come to FSB I will get what I expect: decent service, good food, and a ganache-less cake that still hits the spot.

P.S. If anybody knows of a sweet buttercream slice that likes going to the movies or a delicious bread pudding that isn't allergic to cats, I am currently on the market.

We have been going to the Front Street Brewery for over a year now. I personally love the place and have taken both family and friends to this local stomping ground. Although I am not personally too found of many liquors, I do love some of their beer inspired dishes including the nachos. I would pass on the beer soup unless you are a true beer lover. If that is the case, bottoms up on that as well! And of course, if you love to drink beer...by all means, put this spot on tap! They are a well acclaimed local micro brewery.

We all shared the delicious nachos as our appetizer. They are made from chicken marinated in beer and topped with the standard nacho fixings. The beer definitely makes this dish and do plan on sharing! It can easily feed up to four.

For my main dish, I ordered my all time favorite. The apple, walnut and Gorgonzola salad with raspberry vinaigrette. It is yummy! And the best part, it leaves room for dessert.

My friend ordered a pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw and french fries. She enjoyed it all and believes that this dish is a true test of local success. Could be why FSB is doing so well.

On this day I shared the German chocolate cake with my friend. As always, it satisfied my sweet tooth but was not overly sweet. However, I did miss the chocolate ganache. Somewhere along the way, the chef decided to leave it off. My suggestion...put it back. Will I order the cake in the future?Absolutely! But, the ganache took it to the next level...a true piece de resistance. And for chocolate lovers...a must have.

I for sure will be back to FSB and hopefully, we will see you there as well. Not only does this local place have the food done right...the price is right too!

A Blooming Spot: Airlie Gardens

The Farts: Hot in the summer and no flower markers for true garden enthusiasts

I almost had a heart attack! Truly! I was ready to finally visit Airlie Gardens, with my friend in tow, when what did I discover on their website? This magnificent garden might be sold off by our illustrious New Hanover County government to close the budget gap. A heart attack in the making for sure!!

With my heart beating frantically, off we went. This is one of the most beautiful gardens I have seen. And keep in mind, we went in the heat of the summer which means that the majority of blooms are gone. I lived in S.C. for years and traversed that state regularly on garden tours. Airlie Gardens now tops my favorites!

From the splendid old gent Mr. Airlie Oak (that surely tops 6 stories) to the creepy crawlers perched along the trails (yes I am talking big ugly spiders), this garden will entice any gardener.

Upon entering, one is greeted by a kind person. I did question him in depth about the fate of Airlie Gardens (my blood pressure was way up just thinking of such a loss). He explained that they are currently working on a conservation conservancy which will protect the garden from commercial development but not from possible sale. I would suggest, if you are concerned about their future, you keep checking the website for updates.

Airlie is a beautiful array of nooks and crannies filled with sculptures, arbors, and sitting areas. Contrasted to the privacy of such hidden gems are the open spaces of the lake and greens surrounding the 400 year old oak. Truly, eye candy at every turn!

All gardeners will enjoy the multiple flowering landscapes. The true non gardener will enjoy Airlie's unique offerings including the butterfly house and Minnie Evans sculpture garden.

The complete tour will of course depend on how fast one walks but do plan on spending at least 1 1/2 hours. On this day we spent well over 2 hours enjoying all that Airlie has to offer.

And do bring your camera as you will find lots to photograph!

At every single turn there is more and more eye candy!

I will return for sure to this lovely lady, both in the winter for their well known holiday lights and again in the spring for the Azalea festival. I can't wait!

When I was a child two things would "make" my birthday: 1) My mom's special lunches (she would always add an extra treat and stick a birthday card in) and 2) My mom's birthday pancakes. Man oh man, did I love those babies. First, she would make a pancake the size of my head. Then, she would put various fruits and such to create eyes and a nose (some years it was strawberries, others it was blueberries, a couple of times there were eggs). However, one thing never changed, the "Pan Man's" smile was a thick slab of bacon. Yum.

As the year's have progressed the Pan Man has ceased to exist. This is for a number of reasons, including both my mom's abhorrence of waking up early and my body's never-ending ability to create cellulite and stretch marks (I thought about using this talent to join the circus, alas, they haven't returned my call). Nevertheless, whether or not I can/can't/will/won't eat bacon, the salty piece of meat that clogs arteries across the nation is definitely a piece of heaven. So, where does one go to get bacon and other breakfast goodies within the Wilmington area? Never fear my chickadees! Young Old Fart is to the rescue!

In a little nook near Wrightsville Beach, there is a shack called Causeway Cafe. I had heard of this place through word of mouth (like a secret organization) and decided that it was definitely worth checking out. My friends and I went there around 12 because we had heard that they are normally packed for breakfast. Even though we came during the supposedly "calm" hour there was a 15 minute wait (my friend said this was nothing, she normally waits at least 30 minutes!).

I figured it must be pretty darn good if it's always packed. Luckily, there is tons of seating outside and a pot of complimentary coffee to ease the pain of your wait. Before I get into the food let me warn you about a couple of things. First, this place is NOT fancy shmancy it is definitely a local dive. Second, they are open from 6am-2:30pm and while they do have lunch type foods they are known for their breakfast items.

Third, they DO NOT accept credit cards or debit cards (I KNOW! Who the heck carries money anymore?!). Alright, back to the good stuff. One of my friends ordered a stack of three pancakes with strawberries, bananas, and choco chips (all for around $6, crazy!). She seemed to enjoy them, although she did pine for more bananners. My other friend got a combo meal which included two eggs to her liking (sunny side up), a pancake, and BACON (again, positive feedback)! My last friend ordered their famous waffle which you can top with your heart's desire (I am talkin' about twix, m&m's, and all your other childhood goodies). Unfortunately, while she loved her blueberry walnut combo she was pretty disappointed that they ran out of whipped cream (NOTE: They top ALL waffles with whipped cream unless told otherwise). I found it odd that the server didn't mention they were out BEFORE she gave my friend her waffle (normally they tell you before they give it to you so that you have the option of changing your order).

Anyway, I ordered the veggie omelet with egg whites and whole wheat toast (I opted out of a second side which would have been my choice of grits or hash browns). While the omelet was delicious I had a couple complaints. First, while I know almost every chain does it, it bothered me that they charge more for egg whites (it's as if they WANT me to give into my fatty-cravings and not be able to zip my jeans). Second, my waitress never brought me my toast. The table was given complimentary toast before our plates came out and had I known I wouldn't have been brought mine I would've eaten some. Also, I couldn't complain since my waitress was impossible to catch (one of the downsides of popular small town eateries). All in all, mediocre service and small mishaps aside, I honestly think Causeway Cafe is a delicious bargain (we all ate there for under $9 each). And don't worry friends, if ever you cannot think of a reasonable need to check out this place and find that you have to know why, just remember....Causeway's a crooked letter. Tehe!

Christmas In July: A visit to Southport.

Twas the night before August, when all through our house

We tore up the place, looking for a cool blouse.

Early am we drove to locate St. Nick,

And landed in Southport in a lick.

There were lots of places for Santa to hide,

Including in the water that spread so wide.

YOF in her t-shirt, and I in my cap,

Bound for the downtown to see what was on tap.

Inside Port City Java we stopped for awhile,

And choose a goodie from their pile.

I questioned Santa's Elfin girl,

Who exclaimed he just left in a whirl.

The sun on the streets of the main thorough fair,

Led us from shop to shop without a care.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a magnificent house, with tons of reindeer.

Up to the entrance we flew so quick,

Just knowing we had found St. Nick.

More rapid than ever, we entered his summer home,

And were greeted by a multi-colored gnome.

Santa loved gardening and one could rightly tell,

There were tons of goodies that were oh so swell!

Each room was decorated with exquisite care,

With everything imaginable in Christmas ware.

Downstairs was an ice cream shop filled with flavors to taste,

And lots of visitors obliged without haste.

One of my favs is a room full of candy,

I bought licorice...just oh so dandy.

Around the corner, an animal filled room awaited,

And we entered, yes we were baited.

Lions, tigers, and bears called out my name,

Take me home, take me home, I will be tame!

Ornaments galore hung from ceiling to floor,

And garland wrapped every single door.

Red, green and white was the primary theme,

But we were intrigued by a beautiful glowing beam.

Up, up the stairs we rose,

Only to encounter Halloween foes.

Nearby lurked a fall festive place,

But we came for a purpose and entered his space.

Indeed we had found him, relaxing a bit,

He welcomed us and didn't have a fit.

He told us in his jolly old way,

Come any day and do plan to stay!

Visit my shops, you'll find them plenty galore,

Lining every nook and cranny in Southport for sure.

There is lots to eat, lots to do and see,

And all this you can do at a reasonable fee.

I'll be here for awhile he assured us that day,

So please come and visit and do plan to play.

All through the summer and even into the Fall,

I'll be waiting for you, no need to call.

You're sittin' in your car, listening to the radio. You're thinking, "Aw damn, Justin Bieber is on again...if only I was 15 and able to pull off a bowl haircut, maybe I would be famous too." You change the station because, really, no one likes pretentious pre-pubescent boys. Alright, this station is a bit better...aw, sweet, MJ back in the day. "We Are The World" blasts through your speakers. Yes, it's ridiculously cheesy. But, it sends a pretty powerful message. Great, now you're feeling guilty. 1) You haven't donated money to a charity since Christmas, 2) You haven't called Grammy back, and 3) You JUST finished swiggin' water out of a PLASTIC water bottle. Okay, it's official, you're the spawn of Satan.

Now don't overreact. You can fix this. First, make sure you recycle. Second, stop at the local Target or Walmart and get yourself a stainless steel water bottle. Third, call Grammy (you DO want to keep your title as "her favorite," don't you?). Finally, instead of just giving money to a worthy cause, maybe you should donate some time. But where oh where to go? Don't worry Antichrist, I have you covered:

If you like fishes and other slimy things, try Ft Fisher Aquarium (sharks need love too).
Are you good with kids? Check out The Children's Museum.
Artsy-fartsy type of person? Then, Cameron Art Museum is probably for you.
The place I spend my time at is The Cape Fear Red Cross. They need a wide range of good-doers, from office workers to disaster relief helpers.
Enjoy local history? The Cape Fear Museum needs your help (besides volunteers get benefits!).
How about supporting the performing arts and checking out Thalian Hall?
Maybe you're a people person. In that case, Good Shepherd Center is definitely worthy of your time.
Liberty Hospice offers a tough but heartfelt opportunity.
I could go on all day. If you don't see something that suits your fancy then you're a) extremely picky and b) in need of Volunteer Match (it lists a bunch of opportunities around your area).

Okay buddy, I think you're set to go. So, what have we learned today? 1) Volunteering one's time is a great way to help make the world a better place and 2) Grammy doesn't appreciate when her little Pooh Bear waits three days to call her back. Well, look at that...Pooh Bear is already sprouting wings.

Every time I am reprimanded with suggestions, such as these, I retort with my Buddhist/inner-soul-searchy/really deep answer: Why do I need a man when there are cats, Grey's Anatomy, and most of all... fattening foods? I know ladies, I know...I just blew your minds and potentially changed your lives forever.

So, this past week, I was in need of some lovin', and what better way to fill both my heart and tummy than to shove several cupcakes down my throat? I had been hearing about this joint Coastal Cupcakes for quite some time. While some of my friends recommended it, I also heard some not so great reviews. Either way, I really wanted to give it a go (if not for my own curiosity than for the support of a local business).

The outside looked really promising, it exuded "cute, local eatery." However, when we stepped inside, I was underwhelmed by the choices and size of the cupcakes. IMHO, bigger is ALWAYS better...but, I figured the petiteness simply translated to OUTSTANDING flavor. Boy, was I wrong.

I love coconut, so I chose the coconut cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Since my mom picked one with chocolate frosting, I figured I would test out their vanilla. To my utter shock, there wasn't one cupcake with regular vanilla frosting (weird). Alas, I threw in the towel, and picked chocolate with cream cheese frosting.

First off, the box they came in was adorable. Unfortunately, don't

judge this book (I mean cupcake) by its cover (I mean box). My mom and I wanted to give a complete and fair review of all the cupcakes so we split the four. Before I begin with mine, I'll say right now that my mom's chocolate peanut butter one was my absolute least favorite. The cupcake literally crumbled when I cut it in half. The cake was very dry, the frosting was way too dense and fell off the cake, and it just lacked flavor. As far as the red velvet goes, the cake was dry (yet again), tasted like cornbread, and while the frosting was the best part it was still too dense.

The chocolate with cream cheese frosting had the best cake. It was the only somewhat moist one out of the four. While I thoroughly enjoyed the tangy, not overly-sweet cream cheese frosting, it absolutely did not belong with the chocolate cake. Again, where was their vanilla icing? It was a worse pairing than Drew Barrymore and Tom Green.

The coconut with *SURPRISE* cream cheese frosting was the best overall. The cake was still dry and definitely was NOT coconut flavored (YAH thinks it had a lemony undertone). However, while the cake wasn't terrible, it certainly wasn't good. Luckily, the cream cheese frosting with the coconut shavings overpowered the "eh" base.

All in all, I really hate to say this because I SO wanted to love this place, but I won't be purchasing Coastal Cupcakes again. I suggest they increase their size, offer more options (maybe some with vanilla frosting?), add some pizazz to their offerings (sprinkles, anyone?), completely redo their cake recipes (dry cake is NOT acceptable), spread their frosting over THE WHOLE cupcake (share the love people), and lighten up the density of their icing. Basically, unless CC changes nearly everything, I cannot give them a thumbs up. The worst part is...men are starting to look good to me now.

Right out of the gate, I have to admit that I am not the cupcake fanatic in our family. That crown belongs to YOF. I will eat cupcakes (any cake for that matter) as a second choice when it comes to desserts. My heart belongs to say…chocolate mousse, creme brulee, fried ice cream and other goodies such as these. But, I am definitely very familiar with cake offerings from top notch bakeries. I have been fortunate enough to experience well known NY bakeries as well as a few in California. OK, if you haven't guessed it by now, I am trying to figure out a way to deliver my critique of our newest adventure without sounding overly harsh.

I want every single business to survive, and even more so, prosper and thrive. However, in this case, it baffles me as to how CC is making enough money to stay in business, let alone, warrant opening a second location. Perhaps there is a strategy or audience in their business plan that is not apparent?

On the positive, the location downtown is definitely a winner. Even though parking can be a challenge at times, they were smart enough to select a location that does have a parking garage around the corner ( it offers 1 hour of free parking!). Great start!

Upon entering the business, one is greeted by a glassed display case with their offerings. Meager is the word that came to my mind. I mean really, their only product is cupcakes and yet on this given day, I only saw a small portion of each flavor that they were selling. And the size of the cupcake is also another element that baffles me. I would like to think that perhaps their business plan was written for a gourmet bake shop, but unfortunately, I did not find the flavors or the presentation as an indicator of gourmet. And if they are not trying to be gourmet, but rather an old hometown cupcake shop, then by all means….kick it up a notch! Offer larger-sized cupcakes, fully iced, with garnishments that entice the eyes, and put out a few tables with pretty tablecloths to inspire eating on the premises.

Okay, onto the critique. I purchased the peanut butter cupcake (one of their specials for that day) and their standard red velvet cupcake iced with cream cheese frosting. Neither one impressed me. I will say, the cream cheese frosting was well done. It was flavorful and the consistency was right. The red velvet cake itself was dry, and although I am not a professional baker (and never attested to being one), I would think that icing the entire surface of any cupcake would allow the eater to taste both the icing and the cake in one bite and help to keep the cupcake from drying out (which was a problem with all the cupcakes we purchased). Also, the peanut butter cupcake center, in my opinion, should have been more like a peanut butter mousse rather then a small peanut butter cup. When I bit into the cupcake, it fell out. Put the peanut butter cup on top for both presentation and flavor.

I can only hope that as this business continues to try and grow, it looks outside of Wilmington for ideas to inspire its growth. Sometimes it is best to step outside the box for a different view.

The Dog Days of Summer: Staying Cool in the Cape Fear

It is now approaching August which means hot and humid days here in the Cape Fear. So, what is one to do to stay cool?

OK, I have to admit that I have resorted to some strange ways to beat the heat. Some I will post, some I will not. I have been known to stuff ice cubes on body parts approaching 102 degrees, put my head under a faucet (and yes public ones at times), drink ice cold anything in the hopes of reducing the raging heat, sit in front of an a/c unit, take a cold shower, and dare I not forget, sleep, sleep, sleep in the hopes of waking to beautiful temperatures. (No wonder I have such nightmares during the summer).

There are many things to do in the Cape Fear to keep cool. Some even for free! So here goes the list...

* A day at the beach: Wrightsville Beach

* The Children's Museum

* Fort Fisher Aquarium

* Wandering inside Independence Mall

* A Day at the movies

* Bowling (OK YAH can't do this personally but I used to love bowling)

* Attend a play or performance at Thalian Hall

* Go out to dine at one of your favorite places or one of ours

* Grab a cold dessert like The Fuzzy Peach

* Walk Carolina Beach Boardwalk in the evening (provided a breeze is a stirring)

* Read a local author: Abigail Arrington, Sheila Webster Boneham (Ph.D.), Clyde Edgerton, Daniel Ray Norris, Joseph Funderburg, and Theodore Alexander Fouros

* Hit a local public pool

* Spend the day at Jungle Rapids water park

It's summer, it's the South, and it's hotter than a damn oven. What to do, what to do? Well, the normal answer would be ICE CREAM! However, Wilmington is a very health conscious town with gorgeous people everywhere. Personally, I don't need my pooch (the nickname I gave my lower fat roll) any larger than it already is. Hm, what does that leave? FROYO BABY!

About a week ago The Fuzzy Peach, a frozen yogurt bar, opened up on Racine Dr. (VERY close to the college). My friend and I stopped there one day after the movies in search of a yummy but healthy snack. Unfortunately, they had not opened at the time (due to "the man"), leaving us frozen-yogurtless. Alas, we made a pact to come back once they had finally opened and to indulge (as much as one can indulge with fat-free frozen yogurt) in our desires.

Finally, once we both worked out our schedules and the big FP brought down "the man," we hopped in my mom's car and booked it over to the froyo God. Sadly, I forgot my camera, so all photos are courtesy the FP's facebook page.

Before we even entered FP, we were greeted by a "Credit card machine down. Only accepting cash" sign. AH! Everyone knows that nobody carries cash these days (we've all seen Law and Order, I'm not going to get mugged for $19, two sticks of gum, and a hairpin)! Luckily, I mooched off of my father earlier that day in hopes that I wouldn't have to charge my debit card again (I had just paid off all the interest on my federal loans...pity me). While the 10 bucks I was carrying would be enough for two, my friend and I were still cautious in making our chilly treats. Mind you, this was not easy. First off, the "cups" for the froyo are more like buckets. Second, there were several choices. One could go the healthy tart/fruity route, with choices like peach and tart vanilla OR one could go the classic ice creamy flavor route, with choices like mint and chocolate (keep in mind they constantly change their 8 daily flavors). If I am going somewhere for dessert I am sure as heck not getting some light fruity stuff, so I ended up with a chocolate mint combo while my friend swirled peach and strawberry.

Once you pick your flavors you walk over to the bar and top your froyo as you please. Choices include fresh fruit (if you're into that kinda thing), chocolate, candy bars, sprinkles etc. I picked white chocolate covered pretzels and peanut butter cups, while my friend topped hers with a bunch of vitamin-enriched produce. Finally, you set your pails on the scale and see what your damage totals to. For two "cups" that were between 1/2-3/4 full it was around $8, not bad at all. The poor cashier who was ringing us up however was anxious and nervous, claiming that the day had been "quite hectic." So, I left him a dollar and change tip...he looked at me like I had given him the cure to cancer. All in all, the froyo was very yummy (although beware the mint, it's as strong as an in between course palette cleanser). I highly suggest checking this place out. If not for the food, then for the three handsome UNCW grads that birthed it. Personally, I have my eye on the sexy spokes-peach.

It's A Local Affair: Review of The Cotton Exchange

Upon hearing the name The Cotton Exchange, a picture of bails of cotton piled high immediately entered my mind. However, this shopping locale is very trendy. There is a rich history surrounding this lovely lady. She is well known as Wilmington's stomping ground for both locals and UNCW students and is popular among the tourists as well. And, for good reason!

The beauty of this place is its unique mix of small shops in a rich historic building. Once inside, the shopper can meander down corridors filled with interesting local fare, food, clothing, and even a shop dedicated to our four legged friend. The downside to this setup is that it will be hard for handicapped individuals, excluding the street level floor. During our visits there I have yet to find an elevator and even if one did, there are several twists and turns on the upper levels that are (to me) not wheelchair ready. However, there are benches scattered throughout for the weary.

The Cotton Exchange embodies a good mix of interesting shops that both the young and old can enjoy.

There are two entrances: one from the parking lot level (note: parking is free in this lot behind The Cotton Exchange) and one from Front Street.

Visitors will spend several hours here, wandering in and out of the many shops and eateries. We recently ate at The German Cafe (dessert only) but there are other restaurants inside and outside as well.

For the YAH there are artsy type shops featuring renown locals and plenty of boutiques to enjoy. And, for those of you that lean toward the YOF, you will find plenty of shops as well. Some featuring items from the far east as well as clothing stores that might appeal to your taste.

So if you are in the mood for shopping or just in the mood to have an affair with Wilmington....come on down! It is well worth the trip.

BIG Piggy Feet: Where To Find Large Shoe Sizes

Everyone has that ONE childhood memory (or in my case, several) that stick out in their mind as ridiculously embarassing. You know the one I am talking about. The one that is as clear in your head as if it happened yesterday, the one that when you think of it makes your cheeks burn red, the one that you really hope isn't the tale your parents choose to gleefully tell to your future spouse. Yeah, that one.

I am going to take you back 12 years or so, to a time when Brittany Spears was cool (not psycho), when Leo was everybody's dream hubby (thanks to Titanic), and when people actually conversed with one another face-to-face and not through *GASP* cellphones!

I woke up late for school and was rushing to get out the door. I already had my outfit set, so all that was left were sneakers. Murphy's Law be it that I could only find one and not the other. I spent minutes (which when you're late for school is an eternity) looking for my shoe's partner. Finally, I spotted it, my right-sided plain white sneaker. Perfect...or so I thought. Later in my school day, during recess (because all really embarassing school moments occur at recess), I was starting to wonder why everyone kept looking at me strangely. Was my zipper down? No. Did I have a booger in my nose? Nope. Then, a dear friend (as in somebody who I detested immensely), came up to me, pointed to my feet and said "WHAT IN GOD'S NAME IS WRONG WITH YOUR FEET? DO YOU HAVE SOME DISEASE?" I looked down in confusion, my left foot seemed perfectly fine. Then, I looked over to my right. To my horror it was two sizes larger then its accomplice; I was wearing one of my shoes and one of my mom's. Needless to say, it took me years to get over the trauma (I still constantly check my feet to make sure I am wearing matching shoes).

So, the real question here is how did a first grader have a shoe only two sizes smaller than her mom's? What can I say? I have ENORMOUS feet, a size 12 to be exact. Thus, it's not surprising that I have a heck of a time finding tents for my meaty buddies (you might remember my painful shopping experiences from a previous post). Without further adieu, here is my advice for all my big-footed sistas!

Buy men's sneakers. As long as the style doesn't scream "THIS IS SO A MAN'S SHOE!" then you're completely fine and no one will notice. Try unisex color combos like white/gray, white/navy, white/black, etc.
Try Payless...it's one of the few places that sells a multitude of larger sizes in fashionable styles. HOWEVER, I highly suggest going in the store and trying them on, not just buying them online and crossing your fingers that they'll fit right. You also might want to try their free site-to-store shipping. Unfortunately, the past couple of times I've been there all of their shoes were quite uncomfortable (weird things rubbing my toes on the inside, too tight in the heel/not tight enough etc.).
Surprisingly, Sears sells some brands that extend into the larger ranges. I found my everyday black flats there for the upcoming school year. I specifically recommend the SM New York brand.
For all those other shoe styles that are unique and unlikely to be found in a store, I recommend BarefootTess.com. It's a website catered to sizes 11 and up. I recently bought rain boots from there and I get compliments on them all the time!
If you find a shoe that fits just right, consider buying it in different colors. Those black flats I mentioned earlier? I went online intending to buy them in brown, but they didn't have them (boo!). However, they did have a zebra print...of course I purchased them, rawr!
Finally, don't let the opposite sex make you feel inferior. In fact, a man would be lucky to have you as a girlfriend. First, large feet almost always equal good swimmers. Second, because a lot of shoes don't come in your size, you'll be less likely to pull a Carrie Bradshaw (i.e. obsess over shoes). Third, if he has a foot fetish, there is just THAT much more to love. And if all that isn't enough to convince a man to worship and adore you and your feet, just remember...these boots were made for STOMPIN'!

You Drive Me Crazy: Driving In The Cape Fear Area

When I first arrived in Wilmington, one of the few things I was looking forward to was a more relaxed driving environment. I was so wrong. I never thought it would be possible, but I have actually found a place that has worst drivers than NJ. If you've ever driven on the NJ Turnpike, you would know that when I say this is unbelievable, it is honestly shocking. Lucky for me I was stuck on the UNCW campus Mon-Fri, and over weekends, I would just mooch off my parents for rides. However, my mother (YAH) realized how I was avoiding driving here AT ALL COSTS. I mean, I could only use "I don't feel like going out today" or "My contacts are bothering my eyes and my glasses give off a glare," for so long. But, who could blame me? I was terrified (honestly, I still get very anxious when I am behind the wheel here.)! Everyday we would see at least two accidents, and that would be just driving to the local Wal-Mart. Once, when we drove to the beach I counted SIX! Maybe I was/am being a baby...silly me, wanting all my limbs to stay functioning.

Anyway, I have this theory that all these accidents are due to two distinct factors:

1) Wilmington consists of mainly retirees (aka people who leave their blinkers on and drive 20mph under the speed limit) and college students (aka children who apply makeup and text while driving, go 20mph over the speed limit, and blast their music to the point that anyone who isn't completely deaf can hear them coming from miles away...because obviously all of this is "like totally fine")

2) There are some unusual driving laws/lights/road signs around here.

As far as the freaky rules go, the one I find the most disturbing is u-turns. Basically, it's legal to u-turn around any median and at any light unless indicated otherwise (which honestly, it never is). Why is this a problem? Well, often you'll get people wanting to do multiple things at the same time and no one knows who has the right of way/doesn't care if you do. What does this lead to? A four car pile-up.

Something else that really bothers me is how people constantly sit in the back of trucks and don't seem to worry about being ejected out. This wouldn't give me the jeepers creepers if the average speed limit around here was below 45mph, but it's not. If I were a parent, my child would never be in a car without airbags/safety belts.

Finally, some lights in the Cape Fear area make NO SENSE! Often, you'll see a quadruple rowed light that is sporting three different arrows, all the colors of the rainbow, and five signs around it. Normally everyone just does what they consider is appropriate, and yet again, what does this lead to? No, not a four car pile-up. But, a head-on collision, two rear-enders, and one side swipe.

Well, hopefully, I've at least prepared you for the insanity that is driving in the Cape Fear area. I suggest you bring some good insurance, a car you don't like, courage, and a helmet. God's speed.

Young At Heart says...

It is my firm belief that we need a national driver's license in the great old U.S.A. Living in many states for many years, I can personally attest to the aggravation of trying to get a new license every single time one moves…barring our military personnel of course. With a lot of states, one must take a written test to prove that one now knows the laws of the road for that particular state. Now mind you…one can still have had accidents, tickets, etc. but for some reason the bureaucracy believes that filling in little circles with a number two pencil or clicking on a little circle proves that one knows how to operate a car….NOT!

Wilmington is proof! It has the highest car insurance rate in the state of NC (not that knowing this prior to moving here would have changed my mind). My agent explained that it’s due to the demographics here. OK, let me explain this. Lots of seniors and lots of college students = lots of car accidents=high insurance rates in Wilmington. Now add this little tidbit to the laws of the roads here, a downpour of rain at any given moment (you know the term hydroplaning), and drivers that insist on texting and talking on their cell-phone while driving and you can imagine the pile up rate. It is high. Almost every single day I see at least one accident while driving, and more often two to three.

Now, let me count the causes for accidents. First, u-turns that confuse everyone (as YOF said). Personally, I always wait until I know any possible driver, doing any possible thing, has vacated the area and THEN, and only then, do I proceed to do my u-turn.

Second, we have another neat little ditty that I just know causes accidents: the middle lane (in some areas) that is for drivers to use when making a left turn/right turn. Unfortunately, I have seen drivers use this lane to pass in, park in, and just about anything else but its intended purpose.

All in all, the Cape Fear is a great place to live in. But unfortunately, it is also an accident just waiting to happen, and just as unfortunate…you will pay the price.

Shopaholic Visits Wilmington: Review of Independence Mall

One of the few things I miss about NJ is the shopping. While Wilmington surpasses the Garden State in customer service and nearly everything else, fashion and a variety of size/shaped clothing is NOT one of them.

Being five foot ten and a size 12 in both dress, jeans, and shoe (Yes my foot is THAT big. No, Bigfoot is not a relative nor do I plan on becoming a clown), makes shopping difficult...to say the least. Honestly, I would rather do anything than go look for clothes. I'm not exactly sure what it is. Having to consistently take off and put on my clothes? Having to suck in my stomach to the point where I feel like I'll pass out, just to learn that the jeans I was attempting to fit in were too short? Or, maybe it's the unforgiving florescent lighting that reminds me of my many stretch marks (growth spurts and genetics...YAY!). D) all of the above.

Okay, I think I've made it quite obvious that malls are not my favorite place in the world. However, I am determined to give an unbiased and fair review of Wilmington's Independence Mall, even if I've spent relentless hours there just to turn up empty-handed.

Right off the bat I appreciate the mall's cleanliness and numerous parking spaces; I don't see anyone having to battle over a spot. Good thing too, I've seen people lose body parts over more trivial matters courtesy Jersey attitudes and Black Friday outings.

The mall has four "main" shopping spots: Belk, JCPenny, Sears, and Dillards, with different wings leading to each destination. While Independence houses several stores, ranging from Forever 21 to Bath and Body Works to Victoria's Secret, the layout is quite confusing. YAH and I often discuss how it seems that they had a normal X layout and then decided to add an additional wing later. Either way, it can be a hassle attempting to get where you want to be.

Like I said, the mall offers a pretty decent range of shops. However, my absolute favorite part is the food court. Mmmm, mall food courts. Where else can you get overly priced pizza and extra salty/soggy Chinese food? Okay, maybe the airport. But still, you don't need a $200 ticket to experience this pleasantry. Pick your heart attack: Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, Starbucks, Auntie Anne's, Chick-fil-A, Ming Tree, Sarku Japan, Sbarro, or Charlie's Grilled Subs. On a tight budget (*cough* college students)? You can get all of this...

for the mere sum of $0.75 (there are two candy dispensers in the mall that offer a plethora of options, the above combo was reeses pieces and mike and ikes...I am pleased to say they were both very fresh and tasty!). Now that's using your noodle!

Finally, I think EVERYONE can agree that they can't stand when people go shopping with cranky and unruly kids (not blaming the kids...nobody wants to be there). Well, Independence obviously thought of this and smartly chose to house several activities to entertain the weebies.

Oh, and as for the unruly husbands who complain more than the two year olds, there is a "resting station" with tables, chairs, and soda machines. All a tired wife has to do is plop her husband down, buy him a Coke, pat him on the head, and tell him to be "a good boy." Although, depending on the temperance of the husband, you may want to tie his leash to the chair.

Young At Heart says...

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring...what to do? Off to the mall to track down a fantastic sale. A fantastic sale on what you might ask? Well being the economy is out of gas lately, I do go with a list in mind. On this day I am hunting scent ports from Bath and Body Works. I tend to splurge on all things that make me feel good, including: smellies, food, and comfortable clothing.

Independence Mall is the only inside mall in the Wilmington area. So of course, during downpours, it makes sense to head to there. Although I have gone to Mayfaire Mall, I would not recommend it during inclement weather. I mean who wants to be wandering out in the rain from store to store?

This mall has a good selection of what I consider "affordable stores" (see YOF lists above) and one big plus, it does have a food court for refueling and some fun activities for the young at heart (tweenies and teens in particular for these activities): All About Jumping and Game On, an arcade place.

For the older Young At Heart, such as myself, one can equip themselves with walking sneakers and hit the air-conditioned trails. I saw several people doing just this! And for those of you that don't want to exercise, one can also find a massage (both for pay and for free). (Check out the massage chair in Brookstone!) And yes, frugal readers, you can do a cheap date...they have two chairs. I'm just not sure whether they allow you to bring champagne and strawberries on this free date.

And last, I did break down and hit their refueling station, I opted for pizza. I have yet to find a New York style pizza to my liking in Wilmington (not that I am done looking). So I stayed the course and went with something safe (Sbarro) but unfortunately is was a tad cold : (

Holy Schnitzel: Review of The German Cafe

I was transported to a quaint little cafe in Germany this afternoon. Upon entering The German Cafe, my visual senses were surrounded by all things Deutsch. The walls are peppered with cuckoo clocks, signs and artwork reminiscent of a vintage village cafe. I am delighted to say that even the waitresses are clothed appropriately. Yes, definitely a mini vacation getaway.

On this day, we did not indulge in the full lunch menu but instead dove right into dessert. I did let my eyes meander the full dinning area to "scope out" what others where eating and all the fares looked appetizing. YOF kept scolding me about my sleuthing abilities and insinuated that I was checking out the "meat" next door (a young gentleman taking two elderly ladies to lunch). In fact, I was checking out a schnitzel dish past the party next to us. Oh well....I guess it's all in the eyes of the beholder.

Our "German" waitress recommended the Napoleon for dessert and I obliged. It was delicious, I am happy to report. And yes, it was a twist on the traditional Napoleon, but one I thoroughly enjoyed. It was layered with fresh whip cream and Philo dough and then topped with an almond icing drizzled with chocolate. A fine combination to my palette. But, I am a lover of all things almond. If you don't like the taste of Amaretto or almond, I would suggest you try one of the other desserts. All of them looked yummy!

So for a total check of $12, excluding tip, we were transported to a small village haus in Germany. And yes....I will be back for the full fare in the future.

Young Old Fart says...

Guten Tag! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to nibble on some wiener schnitzel while whispering sweet nothings into your lover's ear? Yeah, neither have I. But that's besides the point. Wilmington's The German Cafe (located behind The Cottage Exchange downtown) is like going on "It's A Small World" in Disney World and stopping to have a meal when you spot the kids in lederhosen. In other words, it's a German dream come true. Both the decor and the music were notable additions to the authentic ambiance the restaurant was trying to create.

Like YAH said, we only stopped by for some dessert (the best part of the meal anyway). While I went in intending to purchase the Napoleon I changed my mind upon seeing the chocolate cake (what can I say? I have a weak spot for anything choco-related...). I dove my fork in and shoved it into my mouth expecting a chocolate explosion to ensue, however, I was thrown for a loop. This cake isn't all that chocolatey. I can't put my finger on it, but it's almost like the gingerbread man cheated on his wife with the neighbor, Devil's food, and spawned this concoction . Though the flavor wasn't what I expected, my biggest problem was the dry cake. I'm sorry, I thought Germans were supposed to make the best chocolate cake. They have their own version named after them for goodness sake! While this cake left much to be desired, I enjoyed my mom's dessert and spotted other meals and goodies that definitely warranted a second visit.

All in all, I really liked this outing, even if it didn't subside my constant fatty cravings. Besides, I learned two important things:

1) My mom is an undercover cougar who enjoys ogling young dashing lads.

2) I should work here...I would look bangin' in some pigtails and dirndl (the female equivalent of lederhosen).

For the Young At Heart: Review of Wilmington's Children's Museum

Ahoy Matey! Today we are off for an adventure to The Children's Museum in Wilmington, and what an adventure it will be. This treasure chest of gems has rooms filled with wonderful things to do, explore, and interact with for children up to the age of ten (not counting YAH..I will always be a child at heart).

With two six year olds, we headed out to the museum mid day. Traffic was lighter than expected but I must admit, parking was a bear. We wound up finding a parking lot around the corner from the museum, paying $5 for the day. Meter parking is available but we couldn't find any available within walking distance on this particular day.

The cost to get in is $8 ea. for adults and children. One might strongly consider membership if you are a local or return for more than one visit (and you probably will if you are here for the entire summer). And don't forget to mention if you are military or a senior, both offer $1 discounts.

Upon entering the museum, one is greeted by a friendly local who can give you an overview of what is available to dabble in for the day (they do offer intriguing options such as playing in the mud but unfortunately on this day mud wrestling was out for me). My imagination burned wild! From becoming Captain YAH to doctor YAH, I was able to vicariously explore their wonderful rooms: pirate ship, camp site, doctor's office, dentist office, arts and crafts room, grocery store, restaurant and the list goes on. And that's just a dabbling of the inside stuff to do here. I could tell from the excitement in my great neice and nephew that they were also having a "shimmer me timbers" good time.

And the best for YAH....we spent over 2 1/2 hours there. I'm happy to report that they do have a fee based refueling station including a good selection of coffee for adults and healthier drinks and snacks for the kids. And last....do check in with their gift shop....we purchased two t-shirts for the kids. Their mom is planning on making a memory quilt some day from all their t-shirts.

Ah Mateys...YAH definitely recommends an excursion to this pearl of a place during the hot summer months here in Cape Fear!

I unfortunately didn't get to experience the "sheer awesomeness" (as stated by BOTH my cousins and my 53 yr old mother) that is The Children's Museum. My day consisted of my 9am-2pm part-time job at UNCW, reading Sophie Kinsella gems, and munching on delicious Dove dark chocolate. While I am disappointed I didn't get to be a doctor, pirate, and artist all in one day, my cousins brought back mile-wide smiles, stinky feet, and a priceless souvenir...

that is now proudly taped to my fridge.

Living Like The Locals: Common Stores In The Cape Fear Area

Whether you're visiting, relocating, or attending college in the Cape Fear area, there are several things you must become accustomed to. While I'll tackle other norms another day, I want to focus on the types of stores you'll see around here.

I spent the majority of my childhood and angsty years in Edison, NJ where Applebee's was the Friday night hotspot and chillin' at Menlo Mall (until it became all ritzy and too expensive for my broke bum) was the place to meet new friends and wreck havoc. Basically, I knew where to go, what to get when I got there, and the specials of the day. When I first moved to Wilmington and started attending UNCW, I underwent "culture shock." Who the heck were these happy people that called me "ma'am" and offered to help me with my groceries? Why was everyone always smiling and asking me about my day? (I doubt natives to the Cape Fear area understand my confusion, but notherners get where I am coming from). Worst of all, I was missing the stores and restaurants I had gotten used to, I missed my "homes away from home." Ultimately, I had to suck it up, get over my losses, and embrace my new area like a true local.

Here is just a sampling of what you may find in the Seahawks' hometown:

While I was used to Starbucks being located on every corner, the most popular coffee chain down here is Port City Java. But do not fear Starbucks lovers (fyi they are SOME Starbucks locations around here), PCJ offers the same types of caffeine-induced concoctions that are just as overly priced. The one difference: you can actually pronounce the names of these products.
My favorite "fast food" place in Edison was my beloved Baja Fresh. Notherners, don't even ask natives about this place, they'll have no idea what you're talking about. Instead, they'll refer you to either Moe's Southwest Grill (which we also have in NJ) OR the collegians' absolute fav Flaming Amy's.
The one way to truly torture me was to force me to go grocery shopping on a Sunday in NJ. It was an experience that guaranteed to supply an elbow to the face, poor customer service, ten naughty curse words, and at least two cart-to-ankle run-ins. While Shoprite, Pathmark, Stop and Shop, and Wegmans were the destinations of my Hell...Food Lion, Lowes Foods, and Harris Teeter are the pleasant grocery stops of Wilmington.
Finally, one of the saddest losses of living in NJ IMHO were the few happy memories I would have during the Christmas season. One of my fav holiday activities was going to Macy's and checking out their Xmas department after dropping off my letter to Santa (don't judge, Santa's my homeboy). Unfortunately, Wilmington does not have a Macy's and there doesn't seem to be any in the neighboring towns. While you can find JCPennys, Sears, and Kohls, the next closest thing to Macy's is Belk. Sadly, I went there this past Xmas and was highly dissapointed...it just ain't the same : (

Well, while there are many other things newbies will need to learn about Wilmington, the above list will just have to do for now. Until then, A WARNING TO ALL NEW JERSYANS: If a Cape Fear native offers to help you with your bags, or gives a cheery "hello"...PLEASE bite your tongue and force back the urge to give them the one-finger salute (it gives everyone from the Garden State a bad rep...

unlike the popular NJ-based reality tv shows, Jersey Shore and Jerseylicious, they just make us seem so clASSy).

Under The Sea: Review of Fort Fisher Aquarium

What to do? What to do? My son, his wife and our lovely grand baby were coming to Wilmington. The catch? My grand daughter is just 14 months old and of course I want to spoil her. I mean, really, what else are grandparents to do? So immediately I start compiling a list of "to do's" for the Cape Fear with a 14 month old in toe. The list was short....very short. I mean it is like 100 degrees here of late with high humidity and we do come from northern blood stock, so we aren't that tolerant of humidity just yet. Immediately the Children's Musuem came to mind but she is too young for that (I'll save that review for a later date when I take my great niece and nephew there). Possibly the beach I ponder? But then I remember my children around that age and all I imagine is the sand in the eyes, nose, and eventually the mouth....that's out. So finally, after much thought and research (and I do mean much research...we are talking a 14 month old that is now just finding her independence with walking unaided), I came up with this short list: The Aquarium and the zoo (post to follow in the future). So off we go under the sea...

I will say that I was more than pleasantly surprised by the fine job they did with The Aquarium. First, it was air conditioned which in this heat was a BIG plus! Second it was truly handicap accessible which was great for me but even greater for Isabelle being she was in a stroller. Their was lots to see and experience there and I have to say that the entire group (5 adults plus Isabelle) really enjoyed it. From the beautiful two story aquarium...

to the touchy feely hands-on exhibits (just kidding),

we all had a grand time. This place is suitable for any age I am happy to report! From weebies to seniors there is plenty to watch, touch and enjoy. We all had a wonderful day under the sea!

While I agree with YAH that Ft. Fisher Aquarium in Kure Beach is a fun activity, there are some things I think need to be pointed out. One, it's about a twenty-five minute drive from Wilmington (if you live near Monkey Junction, if you live closer to Wrightsville it will be much longer). Second, I can't see anyone spending more than an hour at this aquarium. Don't get me wrong, it has beautiful natural exhibits that showcase NC's wildlife, however, it really isn't meant for a full-day outing. Also, don't expect seals and whales, like I mentioned before it is really just a sampling of the local animals. As far as food goes, they have the unhealthy stop-your-heart kind (i.e. ice cream, pretzels, fries, etc), all located outside (in the heat...). The gift shop is really cute and a fun highlight...I would definitely grab SOMETHING to remember the day by. Admission is $8 for 13yrs-61yrs, $7 for 62 and older, $6 for 3yrs-12yrs, and free for anyone 2 and under. IMHO, if you plan on having lots of company, or you have grandchildren/children I would buy individual membership for $30 that allows free admission for two adults on the card and their children/grandchildren under 18...now THAT'S saving some moolah. Finally, being the college student I am, I truly appreciate the fact that the aquarium offers volunteer/internship opportunities...PERFECT for my fellow Seahawks interested in marine bio (the most popular major at UNCW). All in all, while staring at hungry crocs that are sizing me up for dinner isn't my favorite way to spend the day, I am sure the kiddies will adore molesting a stingray.

The Apple of My Eye - Review of Apple Annie's Bake Shop

Bakeries. The yin to my yang, the Sonny to my Cher, the light of my life...the reason my lower stomach (which I fondly call "my pooch") has taken on a mind of its own. All joking and stretch marks aside, pastries, cakes, and desserts of all sorts are my reason for existence. Therefore, when we moved to Wilmington, NC, I was heartbroken that the delicious goodies I had scoured and labeled as "my babies" would no longer be accessible. What is a chubby, choco-craving girl to do? FIND NEW GEMS, BUT OF COURSE!

Apple Annie's is a well-known bakery in Wilmington that has two locations, one on South Kerr and one on Military Cutoff. I have yet to try the Military Cutoff location, so I can only vouch for the other. The first thing I noticed about AA's was its selection. Everywhere else that has offered desserts in the Cape Fear area has had slim pickings, this is definitely not the case with AA. Whatever you dream is your hearts desire here...from german chocolate squares (delicious) to the cinnamon croissant (amazing) to white chocolate macadamia cookies (have yet to try), AA's will surely have something for everyone (they even offer sugar-free goodies!). The customer service is absolutely amazing as well. Not only do the employees allow you to take your time, they also offer words of encouragement to lead you along your artery-clogging way!

I really do love this place. However, like everything else, there are SOME drawbacks. First, there is nowhere to sit in the bakery, it is set up so that everything you buy is to be eaten at home or somewhere else. Second, all of their offerings are refrigerated, even items that should be warm (such as a croissant). This could definitely become an inconvenience to anyone who would like to enjoy their selection pronto. My suggestion is either wait till you encounter a microwave OR kindly ask one of the employees to heat it up for you (I don't see why they wouldn't). Finally, while YAH may disagree, I think that though their quality is always worth the price, their quantity isn't. I understand that not everyone wants a cupcake the size of their head (you would be stupid not to), but selling a cheesecake morsel for $3 seems outlandish. Again, this last complaint could be due to my pooch's impressive mind control and constant need for fatty goodness.

Today I sampled their chocolate croissant.

Right off the bat I was pleased with it's size and obvious cholateyness...I mean, check out that drizzle and ooze seeping from the middle!

When I got home, I ripped this sucker out of its pretty package, stuck it on a plate, and microwaved it for 1 minute. I used a fork to eat it, but most people would just grab a napkin and shovel it in. The pastry itself wasn't crunchy but light and fluffy (not soggy at all). The chocolate middle was warm, gooey, and sinful. This baby is not meant for the kiddies or wimpy milk-chocolate lovers...this one is stuffed to the gills with semi-sweet chocolate. The richness of the chocolate paired with the mildness of the pastry (it wasn't very sweet), makes for a yummy snack, and dare I say it? A rewarding breakfast treat? (It's acceptable as long as skinny french people keep eating them for le petit déjeuner as well.) Overall, I definitely recommend this beauty. It's worth both the $2.50 I spent AND the extra mile I'll have to run tomorrow.

Apple Annie's is definitely one of the best bake shops, if not the best in Wilmington. I have purchased goodies from many bakeries (NJ, NY, SC, and California) and this one ranks right up there. So far (third visit so far as we just recently discovered this little local gem) almost everything I have eaten there was delicious, the service was great and the prices reasonable for the quality of their smaller treats. Hats off to this bakery!

Today I ate their Reese's peanut butter bar and it was out of this world. It is layered with a yellow cake and what I presume (hate the word assume) is Reese's peanut butter mousse surrounded by a delicious dark chocolate. Nestled on top is a small Reese's peanut butter cup. This delectable goodie is not overpowering with sweetness and allows the diner to walk away without that heavy feeling. You can be sure I will be buying this baby again in the future. For $2.50 plus tax I think it is definitely a sweet dream!

Now on the down side, I was completely disappointed with their carrot cake square. Oh bombs! And a big one at that! Now I will fess up that I am a traditionalist when it comes to certain desserts but willing to give a new twist a try. But....this twist just turned me the wrong way. It was composed of carrot cake with this foreign substance in the middle. After some contemplating I determined that the baker had choosen to layer in either a pineapple or orange marmalade. Gross!!!! And then to add to my dismay, the icing was buttercream instead of the standard cream cheese icing. All in all, a terrible combination in my opinion. Maybe if the icing was the traditional cream cheese icing, I might have been able to stomach the marmalade but with that combo it was way too sweet for carrot cake. Oh well...back to the drawing board for this one!

But have heart dear readers....I ate this scrumptuous goodie last night that rocks! Their Mocha Fudge Bar is well worth the drive! It was layered with white cake and mocha mousse...great combo but then wrap that in dark chocolate and you have a home run. Again for $2.50 plus tax, I think it is worth every penny! Yum...yum...yum is all I can say! Just thinking about this and the Reese's goodie makes me want for more. And you can be sure...I will be buying again from AA!

Life Can Be A Beach: Review of Wrightsville Beach

THE HEARTS (pros): Free, clean, good for water activities, some free parking spaces, close to Wilmington, family oriented, lifeguards are on duty

THE FARTS (cons): Most parking is charged, no public bathrooms, no public transportation, doesn't have a boardwalk

This beach reminds me of the fifties when I spent weeks roaming the NJ coastlines. Here is a beach lined with well kept homes and an open expanse of pleasant white sand. The only difference is that Wrightsville doesn't have a boardwalk but it does have some stores near the main entrance. Beach goers here are an eclectic mix of families, singles and retirees. I would definitely pack an umbrella, cooler full of goodies (food is allowed on this beach but no alcohol) and camera(one can get great beach pictures). The sand is pleasant on the feet and the water is great! We had a blast swimming (lifeguards are on duty), sea shell finding and just checking out all the visitors and locals. I am embarrassed to say that Young at Heart enjoyed the lifeguards more than Young Old Fart. Definitely worth the trip if you enjoy swimming, boogie boarding or just a great day basking in the sun! Don't forget the sunscreen and the best part…..THIS BEACH IS FREE. Definitely a day on a dime!

Ah, Wrightsville Beach, the cause of 2.0 GPAs and sun-burnt Freshmen at UNCW. As you may or may not know, the beach is the main reason kids apply to my beloved college. Funny, you would assume that such a popular hotspot for collegians would provide transportation (free or not). However, this is not the case. Though "The Wave" (Wilmington bus transportation) plops students almost anywhere in the town for free, it cannot shuttle them to Wrightsville Beach. Why, you may ask? Well, Wrightsville Beach is a completely separate town from Wilmington, thus, Wilmington transportation has no legality there. Alas, my fellow Seahawks must fend for themselves and either hitch rides with their roomies, bike it, or sprout wings and fly. While Wrightsville doesn't charge admission (yay!), they don't provide public bathrooms and parking can be a...well, a beach (boo!). Basically, if you have to pee you have two options: 1) buy a two dollar water bottle at the local pizzeria to gain access to their coveted restrooms OR 2)use the ocean to your advantage (makes you wonder what everyone is doing out in the big blue...). As far as parking goes, it is Wrightsville's main revenue. So, you can either park in the few and golden free spaces (like the church parking lot located before the bridge on your left) or pay a fee. Note: if you are using meter parking, I would pay for more time than you expect to be on the beach so you don't have to be the chosen loser running in their wet trunks adding money later in the day. Overall, Wrightsville is pleasant. It's clean and it's a hop away from Wilmington (unless you're driving during peak summer hours).

Welcome one and all! Come follow my mom and I as we journey through the Cape Fear Coast and review everything that comes our way. From events to shopping to food (my personal expertise), we will tell you all you'll need to know to have a surefire time. Just so we can get close and comfortable, I'll give you some background. I am a nineteen year old who attends UNCW for a major in management and leadership (for now...though the circus is looking more and more tempting). I don't fit the "college" stereotype. In fact, you might say I am a grumpy retiree at heart. I hate loud music, I put my pajammys on by 7pm, and I think only birds should "tweet." My idea of a good time is german chocolate cake, petting my cats, and watching Grey's Anatomy re-runs...yes, I have cats. I am a northerner at heart, a Jersey one at that, so I don't bite my tongue. I may not tell you what you want to hear, but you'll always get my fair and honest judgement...SO GET USED TO IT!

Wooohoooo we surely will find some fun!!! I am 53 and disabled but I do my darndest to stay positive, explore as much of my town as I can and do it on a dime...if at all possible. After choosing to settle here just about a year ago, I found that I loved this place and can't imagine that there won't be somewhere to go, something to eat, and people of all ages to meet. Why should you listen to my opinion? Well, we owned a restaurant near Charleston SC for about eight years and I have worked for very large companies as a corporate trainer and definitely understand the SOP's of things (if you are wondering what an SOP is....Standard Operating Procedure). My strong belief is that every single business should offer customer service, customer service, customer service, and I will hold every business I encounter to that standard!!! I'll be honest and forthright when it comes to my reviews and I will expect my monies worth. So in a nutshell I plan on having a blast while giving the "insiders" scoop on what I think are the dos and don'ts of The Cape Fear Coast. So put on your floppy hat, some sunscreen and let's get going....
